The story of an old man whose son refuses to take care of his father’s sweets shop
In the quiet town of Malgudi lived an old man named Jagan. He was known by everyone as the Mithaiwalla — the vendor of sweets. He ran a small sweets shop and made laddus, mysore pak, and jalebis with his own hands.
Jagan was a simple man. He wore khadi clothes, believed in Gandhi’s ideas, and lived a peaceful life. He was proud of his shop and worked hard every day. He hoped that one day his only son Mali would take over the business.
But Mali had different dreams. He didn’t want to make sweets or follow his father’s ways. He wanted to go to America and become a writer. Jagan was shocked but didn’t stop him. Mali left, and Jagan stayed behind with his shop and his hope.
After a few years, Mali came back. But he had changed. He looked modern, spoke differently, and brought with him a Gori girl — a fair-skinned foreign woman. He said she was his partner, but they were not married. This made Jagan uncomfortable.
Mali also said he had no interest in the sweet shop. He wanted to open a factory that made machines for writing stories. He asked his father for money. Jagan felt confused, hurt, and lost. His son had no respect for his life’s work.
In silence, Jagan made a hard decision. He gave up the shop and the business, and walked away. He left the money for Mali and chose to live alone — peacefully, reading books and thinking about life.

- Parents often dream that children will follow their path — but children may choose differently.
- Letting go is painful but sometimes the only path to peace.
- Tradition and modern ideas should understand each other with love.
- True love means giving freedom, not forcing decisions.
