Adventure Tourism Definitions

The terms used in adventure tourism reports in Pakistan are explained below for better understanding of trekking and mountaineering activities.

Adventure Tourist

An adventure tourist is a person, irrespective of race, gender, age, nationality, creed, and color, who takes part in mountaineering or trekking as an active participant. The duration of stay outside their usual place of residence exceeds 24 hours but remains less than 180 days.

Mountaineer

A mountaineer is a person who participates in any mountaineering expedition to a peak exceeding 6000 meters in height. The individual stays away from their usual place of residence for more than 24 hours but less than 180 days.

Mountaineering

Mountaineering is the act of climbing any peak above 6000 meters in any mountain range of Pakistan with the objective of reaching the summit.

Trekker

A trekker is a person who participates in trekking activities below 6000 meters in open, restricted, regulated, or closed zones. The duration of stay is more than 24 hours but less than 180 days.

Trekking

Trekking is the act of traveling on foot up to a maximum altitude of 6000 meters for sightseeing and recreation in natural and cultural areas where modern transportation is not available.

Low Altitude Porter

A low altitude porter is responsible for carrying equipment, supplies, and materials of trekking and mountaineering expeditions up to approximately 5500 meters, usually up to the base camp.

High Altitude Porter

A high altitude porter carries essential equipment and supplies beyond 5500 meters in high mountain environments.

Source of Data

Data for mountaineering and trekking activities in restricted zones is collected from records maintained in the Operation Section of the Ministry of Tourism. Activities conducted in open areas where permits are not required are not included in these statistics.
