The above Table reflects that:-
There are ups and downs in foreign tourist arrivals in the last
ten years. The foreign tourist arrivals decreased by 2.4 percent
from 378 thousand in 1995 to 369 thousand in 1996, whereas
from 1997 to 2000, the arrivals continually increased from 375
thousand to 557 thousand. Arrivals dropped to 500 thousand
in 2001 and further to 498 thousand in 2002, but again rose to
501 thousand in 2003 and 648 thousand in 2004 which is 29.4
percent greater over the previous year.
There were also irregular trends in tourism receipts during the
last ten years. The tourist receipts went up from US $ 114
million in 1995 to US $ 146 million in 1996, but decreased to
US $ 76 million in 1999. The receipts however have been
showing increasing trend since 2000 when they were US$ 84
million, and reached US $ 185.6 million in 2004.
Indices of Foreign Tourist Arrivals and Earnings during 1995 to 2004
The indices of tourist arrivals (1990 as base year = 100) remained
almost constant during the year 1995, 1996, 1997 i.e. 89, 87, & 88
respectively. It went up to 131 in the year 2000 and came down to 118
during the year 2001, and remained the same till 2003, but climbed upto 153
in 2004. The indices of foreign exchange earnings (1990 base year = 100)
during the last ten years, showed a mix trend, fluctuating between 49 to 93
during the period 1995 to 1999, but it is continually increasing since 2000
having grown from 54 to 119 as shown in Table No. 2.
