Tourism and Employment:

Tourism industry in Pakistan comprises 1151 hotels with 37391

rooms and 188 Air-conditioned restaurants, seating capacity of 20639.
Travel Agents and Tour Operators number approximately 2000, and
Hotels, tour operators and travel agents directly employ more than
500,000 people. Other tourism sectors such as, airlines, road transports,
souvenir shops etc. also provide employment to a large number of people
besides paying taxes, license & registration fee etc. to the public
exchequer.

Tourism and Regional Development:

Tourism being a labour intensive industry, it creates more jobs and

opportunities in the areas, which are not suitable for industrial development.
It helps in redistribution of wealth to remote areas and creates job
opportunities from highly qualified to people with low academic profile such
as waiters, cooks, housemaids and janitorial workers.

It is estimated that more than half of total income earned by the

people from tourism sector came from backward districts/areas having
attraction for tourists. These areas were mostly, Murree and Galliat,
Northern Areas, Swat, Ziarat, Abbottabad, Kaghan, Naran, Peshawar, Azad
Kashmir and other smaller resort areas.

IV - Domestic Tourism and its Features

Tourist Volume.

Based on the findings of Domestic Tourism Survey -2000, in all 41.4

million domestic tourists are estimated to have travelled within the Country
during 2004.

Features of Domestic Tourism

Nearly 90 percent of domestic tourists travelled by road, 8.5 percent

by rail and 1.8 percent by air. (See Table No. 4.1 of Statistical
Appendix).

Over half of the domestic tourists, were motivated for social calls,

followed by recreation, business and health. These four motivating
factors, combined together, formed 84.7 percent of travel in Pakistan.
