The recent bomb attack on Afghanistan has badly effected the travel & tourism Industry. The American travel advisory already very discouraging travel to Pakistan has stopped all American to travel to Pakistan. Pakistan receives a good No. of American tourists every year due to the efforts of Private tour operators & PIA. This new development will reduce overall arrival of tourists to Pakistan. Government & our foreign mission need to play their role and try to relax the travel advisory on Pakistan by USA Japan & UK who all give a very bad picture of Pakistan

Fares of all airlines have been increased by 20% which might be good for the Airlines but it will be quite a hard hit on the passengers who are already facing the recent foreign exchange hike. This definitely makes the foreign travel expansive but domestic travel can attract more people towards the beautiful valleys of Pakistan. Which is needed as not many of us have really seen the splendor of our country.

Gilgit famous for its Rugged & beautiful Karakorum mountains and excellent shopping of Chinese goods, is a small city with a variety of things to do around it. The best hotel of Gilgit is Serena Hotel Gilgit. The hotel is located 5 Kilometers from the center of Gilgit in Jutial, surrounded by a manual pine forest and a beautiful scenery of Karakorums. From the garden of the Hotel there is a spectacular view of Rakaposhi (7788m) and Dumani (7350m) Peaks. The hotel has 43 finally decorated rooms with all amenities of a 4 star hotel. The Restaurant serves excellent food of all kind of meals.

One can reach Gilgit from Islamabad via Karakorum highway best is to break your journey halfway at Besham or Barseen. ( Both places have PTDC motels) There are also regular flights daily from Islamabad to Gilgit & back but due to the massive mountains on the way this flight is totally dependent on weather (Clouds ) Hence it is not advisable to take the flight as the scenery on Karakorum Highway is also spectacular.

Gilgit is usually hot in summers but only an hour & half drive by jeep from Gilgit is a beautiful valley called Naltar. Naltar is cool & beautiful meadow, which was used in the British times as a hill station and today it is venue for Pakistan Army`s winter survival courses and a great ski area. You can get a jeep from the Serena hotel or Gilgit town to reach Naltar spend few hours there and return in the late afternoon. Jeep road is quite adventurous so be prepared for some unique turns and dust.

Beyond Naltar there is a small lake only about 2 hours easy hike. It will be worth a try as the scenery can really give you an experience of life time. There is also a trek of 6 Days via 4500 Meters Naltar Pass which may be arranged if you feel you have enough energy & strength to do it.

There is not as such a hotel in Naltar but a small restaurant can serve you delicious Dal & some chicken for lunch and if you want to camp there is a whole lot of area for you to select from.

Upon high Altitudes if you take some Apricots, which are widely available in our Northern areas. You will feel much better and can tolerate the altitude sickness. This is My practical experience. I always carry a bag with me when a group of mine is going to Khunjrab pass. Some one also suggested to take an aspirin before leaving I guess that is also effective.
