The Watchman – A Short Story

This story explores loneliness, duty, and the quiet sorrow of those who are often forgotten. It tells us how people in service roles are rarely seen for who they are — as human beings with their own lives, regrets, and emotions.

The watchman in this story is an old man who guards the gate of a large building on the edge of the town. Every evening, he stands at his post silently, observing the world pass by. He takes his job seriously, though it offers little in return — no respect, no companionship, and no comfort.

One night, a schoolboy, who has run away from home after an argument with his parents, tries to hide near the building. The watchman catches him but doesn't punish or report him. Instead, he gently talks to the boy, asking what happened and why he’s out so late. The boy hesitates at first, but slowly opens up.

The watchman shares a little of his own life — how he once had a son who ran away and never returned. The pain of that loss is still fresh, hidden under his silence and discipline.

After listening to the boy, he advises him to return home before things become worse. He reminds him that parents may seem harsh, but they still care deeply. His calm, fatherly words touch the boy's heart.

In the end, the boy goes home. The watchman returns to his quiet post, blending back into the shadows — unseen, but full of emotion. Once again, he watches over others while no one watches over him.

Moral of the Story

  • People who seem ordinary often carry deep pain and wisdom.
  • Everyone deserves kindness and to be listened to — no matter their role in society.
  • Running away may feel like an escape, but facing the truth is often braver.
  • Sometimes, strangers can help heal us in ways our own family cannot.
