Swaminathan, or simply Swami, is a playful, curious, and often confused schoolboy living in the town of Malgudi. He enjoys skipping homework, daydreaming, playing with his friends, and avoiding trouble at school — though trouble usually finds him.
Swami’s small world is full of big emotions. His closest friends are Mani — strong, loyal, and always ready for a fight — and later, Rajam, a polished, well-dressed boy who becomes the new star of the class. Rajam is the son of a police officer, and soon, the three boys form a strong friendship.
They eat together, play together, and even decide to start their own cricket club. Swami finally feels like he belongs.
But childhood isn’t always kind. Swami gets into trouble at school, skips classes, and lies to his friends. The pressure of studies and fear of punishments start to affect his cricket practice. Rajam gets upset. Their bond begins to crack.
Then one day, Swami learns that Rajam is leaving Malgudi forever. Swami rushes to the station with a small gift and a goodbye letter. But Rajam, hurt and silent, says nothing. The train leaves. Swami stands alone.
That’s how childhood works — full of feelings, few words, and memories that linger forever.
