Pakistan International Airlines (PIA): A Timeline of Triumphs and Challenges
A Golden Start: From a Private Venture to a National Asset
Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) traces its roots back to Orient
Airways, a private airline founded in 1946, just before the partition of
the Indian subcontinent. By the early 1950s, Orient Airways merged with the
newly established PIA, marking the beginning of Pakistan's state-owned
airline. In 1955, PIA began its first international flight, connecting
Karachi, Cairo, Rome, and London.

The 1960s: A Decade of Glory
PIA's golden era is widely attributed to Air Commodore Malik Noor Khan, who
assumed leadership in 1959. Under his guidance, PIA achieved several
milestones:
- Asia’s First Jet Service: In 1960, PIA became the first Asian airline to operate a Boeing 707 for its Karachi-London route.
- Record-Breaking Feats: In 1962, PIA began its New York service, raising its global profile. Two pilots, Captain Abdullah Baig and Captain Ghayur Baig, set a world record for the fastest flight from London to Karachi in just 6 hours, 43 minutes, and 55 seconds—a record that remains unbeaten.
- Creative Flair: PIA commissioned the renowned French designer Pierre Cardin to design its cabin crew uniforms, setting a global trend in airline fashion.
PIA also played a pivotal role in uniting Pakistan’s geographically separated regions—East and West Pakistan—through direct flights, avoiding the lengthy and perilous routes through India.

Innovation and Expansion
PIA broke new ground in the aviation industry during this period:
- It became the first non-communist airline to fly to China, establishing a unique route over the Karakoram.
- The airline introduced inflight movies on international routes, a revolutionary move at the time.
- PIA’s network expanded globally, stretching from Tokyo to New York and Africa to Europe.
Assisting Global Aviation
PIA's technical and operational expertise was sought after by several
airlines. It provided training, aircraft leasing, and operational support to
airlines like Emirates, Air Malta, Somali Airlines, and Air China. Notably,
PIA played a crucial role in the launch of Emirates, with its crew operating
Emirates' inaugural flight in 1985.

Resilience Amid Challenges: Post-1971
After the loss of East Pakistan in 1971, PIA faced significant challenges,
but under the leadership of business magnate Rafique Saigol and later Noor
Khan, it bounced back. The airline:
- Expanded its fleet to include modern aircraft like the DC-10, Boeing 747, and Airbus A300.
- Maintained employment despite fears of downsizing.
- Continued to add new destinations and consolidate its position as a leading regional carrier.
Technical Excellence and Global Recognition
During the 1990s, PIA’s engineering department gained international acclaim
for its ability to maintain and repair aircraft for global clients, including
Boeing and Airbus. The airline was also the first in South Asia to qualify
for the IOSA (IATA Operational Safety Audit) certification in 2005,
underscoring its commitment to safety and operational excellence.
Success Stories and National Pride
PIA’s contribution extended beyond aviation. It was instrumental in promoting
Pakistan's culture and diplomacy globally. For decades, PIA’s iconic slogan—“Great
People to Fly With”—captured the spirit of an airline synonymous with
national pride.

- Jacqueline Kennedy's Endorsement: In 1962, the U.S. First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy praised PIA after a flight, describing it as a great experience, which cemented the airline’s reputation internationally.
- Cultural Icons: PIA's annual calendars and duty-free shops became symbols of quality and prestige, often selling out due to their popularity.

The Decline and Lessons Ahead
Despite its illustrious history, PIA's fortunes have dwindled due to
mismanagement, political interference, and financial missteps. From an
airline that once rivaled the world's best, PIA now faces bans in European
airspace and financial instability.
However, PIA’s golden era serves as a reminder of what is possible when vision, discipline, and innovation come together. With the right leadership and reforms, there is hope that PIA can reclaim its place as a source of national pride.
