Ashura literaly means the 10th day in Arabic is the tenth day of Muharram] It marks the last day of the Battle of Karbala, resulting in Hazrat Husayn ibn Ali (May Allah be pleased with him), the grandson prophet Muhammad (Peace be Upon Him), being martyred along with his companions.
Ashura marks the climax of the Remembrance of Muharram, the annual commemoration of the death of Martyrs of Karbala (Iraq) Hazrat Husayn (may Allah Be Pleased with Him) and his family and supporters at the Battle of Karbala on 10 Muharram in the year 61 AH aprox 10 October 680 AD).] Mourning for the incident began almost immediately after the battle. Popular elegies were written by poets to commemorate the Battle of Karbala during the Umayyad and Abbasid era, and the earliest public mourning rituals occurred in 963 AD during the Buyid dynasty. Ashura is a national holiday in Pakistan, and many ethnic and religious communities participate in it by making processions and holding Majlis for the mourning called Sham E Ghareeban.
