Multan Museum – A New Cultural Landmark of South Punjab

The historic city of Multan, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world with a history of nearly 5000 years, finally has a modern museum dedicated to preserving and displaying the rich cultural and historical heritage of South Punjab. For many years tourists visiting Multan often asked, “Where is the museum of Multan?” The long-awaited dream has now become reality with the opening of the beautiful and modern Multan Museum.

The original idea for the museum dates back to 1980, but the project was finally completed in 2026. The foundation stone of the museum building was laid in 2021 and the museum was officially inaugurated on 18 May during the celebrations of International Museum Day.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by Commissioner Multan Amir Karim Khan, the Director General of Archaeology Punjab, the Principal of Multan Public School, school children, and many well-known personalities of Multan. On this special occasion, traditional handicraft stalls representing the identity of Multan were also displayed for visitors.

A Modern Museum for a Historic City

Multan Museum covers a total area of 10 kanal and was completed with a cost of approximately 111.70 million rupees. The museum is fully air-conditioned and has quickly become one of the main attractions of the city.

Visiting hours are currently from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, although timings may change according to the season. Entry has been kept free for the first few days after opening, allowing families, students, and tourists to explore the museum without charge.

The museum is expected to greatly benefit tourists visiting Multan as well as students arriving on educational and study tours. It offers an informative journey through the history, civilization, art, and culture of South Punjab.

History and Heritage Under One Roof

Before the establishment of Multan Museum, South Punjab did not have a proper archaeological museum dedicated to the preservation and display of regional heritage. The creation of this museum was therefore considered essential for protecting and presenting the historical identity of the region.

Commissioner Multan Amir Karim Khan described the museum as an important cultural gift from the Government of Punjab to the people of South Punjab. According to him, the museum will help transfer the historical awareness, cultural heritage, and civilizational identity of the region to future generations.

He further stated that the museum will serve as a positive, informative, and culturally enriching recreational space for citizens while also helping to promote tourism in Multan and South Punjab.
